We began our journey in Victoria, soaking up the charm of British Columbia’s capital city. This is where nature takes center stage — massive salmon push their way upstream, black bears feast along the riverbanks, and the rhythms of the wilderness are impossible to ignore. It’s also a major hub for Campbell River BC fishing and a gateway for unforgettable grizzly bear tours, drawing anglers and wildlife lovers from around the world. Remote and rugged, yet welcoming, Campbell River offers crisp coastal air, wide open spaces, and genuinely friendly locals. Oceanfront Stay at Above Tide Motel
After Cathedral Grove, we continued north to Campbell River, where we spent the night. This town is known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” and it has a relaxed coastal vibe we instantly loved.
We stayed at Above Tide Motel, and honestly, we couldn’t recommend it more. The room was cozy, the view was spectacular, and falling asleep to the sound of waves was something special. If oceanfront accommodations are on your list of things to do on Vancouver Island, this place delivers.
Black Bear Encounter Near the Campbell River Hatchery
This is where our trip took an unforgettable turn.
While visiting the salmon hatchery near Campbell River (after hours, no less), we parked and walked in — and suddenly realized we were not alone. A wild black bear appeared nearby, calmly going about its evening.
Locals were fishing, the light was beautiful, and the moment felt surreal. Seeing a black bear in the wild, in such a peaceful setting, was one of those travel experiences you never forget. It was a powerful reminder of how connected Vancouver Island is to nature.
Campbell River BC Fishing & the Salmon Hatchery Experience
The next morning, we returned to the Quinsam hatchery during opening hours and spent time talking with a local fisherman and his dog. Watching the salmon run was fascinating — fish jumping, biting, and pushing upstream.
The fisherman shared incredible insights about the different salmon species. In October, he explained, coho salmon are the only ones worth catching because the others have already gone bad. He also told us something fascinating: bears are often after the caviar, which is why they’ll toss aside male salmon.
Ilya even tried his luck fishing, adding another memorable moment to our Vancouver Island adventure.

Dick’s Fish & Chips: A Local Favourite
That evening, we ate at Dick’s Fish & Chips, a local favourite — and for good reason. The fish was fresh, perfectly cooked, and incredibly satisfying after a full day of exploring.

Why October Is an Underrated Time to Explore Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island completely blew us away. If we come back — and we definitely will — we’d spend far less time in Victoria and much more time exploring the island itself.
While summer would be amazing for camping and extended outdoor adventures, October turned out to be the perfect time to visit. Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices made hiking and exploring incredibly enjoyable. Keep in mind, summer on Vancouver Island can be expensive, with gas prices rising significantly.

Is Vancouver Island Worth Visiting? Absolutely.
