Things to do and eat in Orillia Ontario

Why Orillia Ontario is the Hidden Gem of Ontario

Sometimes the best adventures are found not by taking the fastest route, but the most scenic one. That was certainly the case for our recent fall road trip from Ottawa to Orillia, Ontario. Trading the monotonous grey of the 401 highway for the winding roads through Bancroft, we were rewarded with a breathtaking display of autumn colours. Every turn revealed a new landscape painted in fiery reds, brilliant oranges, and sunny yellows. This scenic detour wasn’t just for the views; traveling with our electric vehicle and our dog meant a stop to charge up and stretch our legs was a welcome part of the journey. This slower, more intentional drive set the perfect tone for what we were about to discover: the immense charm of Orillia.

Nestled between Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe, Orillia is a town that immediately feels like a warm embrace. With a population of just over 30,000, it offers a refreshing escape from big-city hustle. The air feels cleaner, the streets are uncrowded, and the people greet you with a genuine smile. We came looking for a mix of nature, good food, and entertainment, and Orillia delivered more than we could have imagined. This is our guide to why this lovely town should be on your list for a perfect fall getaway.

A Culinary Adventure Begins in Orillia, Ontario

After settling in, our first mission was food. We were pointed towards Niku Grill, and it turned out to be an experience unlike any other. This isn’t your average all-you-can-eat restaurant. Each table is equipped with its own grill, allowing you to become the chef and cook your selected meats to perfection. The novelty is fantastic, but the quality of the food is what truly stands out.

Alongside the grill-your-own options, the menu offered an impressive selection of fresh sushi and classic Chinese dishes. As we placed our order, we were delighted to see a sleek robot gliding through the restaurant, delivering plates to tables. It was a fun, futuristic touch that added to the unique atmosphere. Even the bathrooms held a surprise—high-tech Japanese toilets that were a quirky and memorable feature. Niku Grill set a high bar for our culinary tour of Orillia.

With full bellies, we needed a walk. A short drive led us to Couchiching Beach Park, the jewel of Orillia’s waterfront. We strolled along the well-maintained boardwalk as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the lake. The park features a great playground for families, plenty of green space, and stunning views of the city across the water. It was the perfect, peaceful end to our first day.

Exploring the Heart of Downtown Orillia

The next morning, we stepped back in time for breakfast at Wimpy’s Diner. The classic retro decor, complete with black and white checkered floors and red vinyl booths, instantly transported us to the 1950s. It’s a place with a cool, nostalgic vibe and a menu full of hearty, classic diner fare that fueled us up for a day of exploring.

Since it was a Saturday, we headed straight for the Orillia Farmers’ Market, held in the square just outside the magnificent Orillia Opera House. This beautiful, historic building provides a stunning backdrop for the bustling market. Local vendors offered everything from fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to handmade crafts. The sense of community was palpable, with locals chatting and enjoying the crisp autumn morning.

Just a short walk from the market, we stumbled upon a true local treasure: the Mariposa Market. Walking inside felt like entering a wonderland of deliciousness. The sprawling space houses a bakery with mouth-watering croissants and pastries, a deli crafting fresh sandwiches, a fudge counter with dozens of flavours, and shelves stocked with homemade sauces, jams, and local souvenirs. You could easily spend an hour just trying to see everything. We left with bags full of treats, understanding why this market is a beloved institution.

Nature, Trails, and Small-Town Friendliness

One of our favourite things about traveling with our dog is the excuse to explore local trails. Orillia is a haven for nature lovers, and we chose to walk a section of the Millennium Trail. This path winds through beautiful wooded areas and quiet residential communities, showcasing the town’s natural beauty.

What struck us most was how incredibly clean and well-maintained the trail was. The path was wide, the fall foliage was stunning, and it was wonderfully dog-friendly. But the best part was the people. Almost every person we passed offered a friendly “hello” or a warm smile. This simple act of kindness, so different from the anonymous rush of a big city, defined the small-town feel that makes Orillia so special. It’s a place where people seem genuinely happy to be, actively walking, riding bikes, and enjoying their community.

An Evening of Pizza and Entertainment

For our final evening, we sought out a special dinner and found it at Rustica Pizza Vino. This cozy restaurant specializes in authentic, wood-fired pizza, and it did not disappoint. We shared a delicious Italian salad and a perfectly blistered, flavourful pizza that tasted straight out of Naples. It was the ideal comforting meal before heading out for a night of excitement.

The grand finale of our trip was a visit to the legendary Casino Rama. This massive complex is a major entertainment hub, drawing visitors from all over. We tried our luck at the casino for a bit before making our way to the concert venue. We were thrilled to see one of our favourite country artists, Russell Dickerson, perform. The venue is fantastic, offering great sightlines and sound, making for an unforgettable live music experience. It was the perfect, high-energy conclusion to our Orillia adventure.
